CNN —Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said it was a “sad situation” seeing his players squabble over who was going to take a penalty during an otherwise impressive 6-0 win against Everton. Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke both felt that they should have responsibility, as did Palmer, Chelsea’s regular penalty taker. The striker then calmly rolled the ball into the bottom-left corner to give Chelsea a 5-0 lead at Stamford Bridge. “And then if Palmer wants to give the ball to another he can, but not in this way. “Maybe it was a bit over the top, the argument and stuff, but everyone just wants to win [and] help, it’s nothing major.

However, the top flight of English soccer had never seen an Australian manager in its 31-year history – that is until the arrival of Ange Postecoglou. Ian MacNicol/Getty ImagesThe Australian was greeted with a similar reception when he was hired by London club Tottenham in the summer of 2023. “He’s inspired Australian football and inspired Australian football coaches,” Dr. Craig Duncan, one of the nation’s leading sports scientists who worked with Postecoglou during his tenure with the Socceroos – the Australian national team – told CNN Sport. So much so that, according to Duncan, many Australian football fans he has spoken to will immediately check the score of Tottenham’s matches when they wake up. “This isn’t about us playing good football, it’s about us winning games of football,” Postecoglou told reporters after a recent 2-1 defeat by West Ham.

LONDON (AP) — It took Kevin De Bruyne less than five minutes to show why his return from injury could be so crucial for Manchester City in the second half of the Premier League season. De Bruyne had not made a league appearance since the opening round of the season in August, but it looked like he'd never been away. And in stoppage time, he lifted a perfectly weighted ball into the box for substitute Oscar Bobb to score his first Premier League goal and complete the comeback. Only two games were played Saturday with half of the Premier League teams having the weekend off for a short winter break. It was the 21-year-old Palmer’s ninth league goal of the season and fifth from the penalty spot after joining from Man City in the offseason.

Classy Newcastle thrash Chelsea 4-1 as James sees red

NEWCASTLE, England, Nov 25 (Reuters) - Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak netted on his return from injury, while two quick-fire second-half goals and a late Anthony Gordon strike gave the Magpies a 4-1 Premier League win over 10-man Chelsea at St James' Park on Saturday. Chelsea drew level 10 minutes later as Raheem Sterling was brought down on the edge of the box, and the winger stepped up to drill the resulting free kick past the flat-footed Nick Pope. Newcastle almost went in ahead at the break as a free kick from fullback Kieran Trippier hit the crossbar, but there was little indication of the collapse to come from Chelsea in the second half. Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino, slammed his side after a result that leaves them 10th on 16 points, saying it was their worst game of the season. But Trent Alexander-Arnold drilled in an 80th-minute equaliser with his right foot to deny City a 24th successive home win in all competitions. The result left City on 29 points from 13 games with Liverpool one point behind and Arsenal later claimed a late 1-0 victory at Brentford thanks to Kai Havertz's header. Arsenal leapfrogged Liverpool and City into first place with 30 points. Haaland did what he does best, firing home after Alisson's poor clearance had found its way to Nathan Ake. Aston Villa beat Fulham 3-1 to match a 40-year-old club record of 13 straight home league wins. City opened the scored when Spanish defender Marc Cucurella pulled Haaland's shirt to concede a VAR-checked penalty which the Norwegian coolly converted in the 24th minute. Things were far more sedate at Anfield where Liverpool moved right into title contention thanks to another contribution from the talismanic Salah. "Crazy," Klopp said of the 31-year-old Salah, who has 10 goals in 12 league games this season. Before the mayhem of Monday's home defeat against Chelsea, Wolves away would have been viewed as another opportunity for Tottenham to underline their top-four credentials. But that 4-1 reverse, Postecoglou's first setback in the Premier League, could cost the north London club more than a return to top spot and the loss of three points. A tumultuous derby ended with Tottenham having only four of their starting line-up left on the pitch. A home game against City will perhaps say a lot more about whether or not Chelsea have turned a corner. Former midfielder Paul Scholes believes Ten Hag still has some credit left in the bank after last season when United finished third in the Premier League and won the League Cup.

CNN —Five goals, as many overturned or disallowed, two red cards, and 21 minutes of stoppage time: those are just some of the numbers behind what was a wild and chaotic English Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea. Spurs battled hard and deployed a seven-man high line in defense, which appeared to perplex Chelsea until Raheem Sterling got in behind and teed up Jackson to make it 2-1. James to start for Chelsea in Blackburn League Cup tie

"I can confirm he is going to start," Pochettino told reporters on Tuesday. With just three wins in 10 Premier League games, Chelsea are in 11th place, 14 points behind leaders Tottenham Hotspur. "To go through the competition (League Cup) is important, then go to Tottenham and receive Manchester City to get momentum." Pochettino takes Chelsea to face his old club Spurs in the league on Monday but the Argentine won't let that influence his team selection for the League Cup game on Wednesday. LONDON, Oct 30 (Reuters) - Chelsea supporters travelling to Wolverhampton Wanderers for the Premier League fixture on Christmas Eve will be offered free transport to and from the game, the London club said on Monday. "The club is aware that transport options are more limited than usual on this date, as it is a Sunday and also Christmas Eve," Chelsea said in a statement. "As a sign of appreciation for fans making this trip, Chelsea Football Club will be offering free travel as a goodwill gesture to anyone who purchases a ticket." The change of date to Christmas Eve was criticised by the club's fans who described it as "totally unacceptable". The Chelsea Supporters' Trust said match-going fans would face issues travelling to Wolves on a holiday weekend.

"The frustration is so massive," Pochettino told talkSPORT radio, saying a strong first-half performance gave way to a lack of calm after the break. Defender Marc Cucurella shot straight at Mark Flekken after a lofted pass by playmaker Cole Palmer. But Brentford soaked up everything Chelsea could throw at them with centre forward Nicolas Jackson, back in the starting 11 after an injury, unable to provide much of a threat. Brentford's third league win at Stamford Bridge in as many seasons meant that they leap-frogged their neighbours into 10th spot, while Chelsea dropped to 11th ahead of the rest of the weekend's fixtures. One name linked to the club is Brentford and England centre forward Ivan Toney who scored 20 times in the league last season but who is currently serving an eight-month ban for breaching betting rules.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — There was relief, at last, for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United after a late 2-1 comeback win against Brentford on Saturday. “It has to be a turning point, but also a restart because we have to get into higher levels," the United manager said. “The spirit is good, the belief is good and the team is together. Pochettino hoping Chelsea can build momentum after Brighton win
  + stars: | 2023-09-28 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Sept 28 (Reuters) - Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino said his team "fully deserved" Wednesday's 1-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion in the League Cup and hopes the result will help kickstart their stuttering Premier League campaign. Chelsea are 14th in the league after only one win from six games so far, having drawn two and lost three, and have managed just five goals in the competition. I think it's important to go through in the competition, build our trust and the momentum. Left back Ben Chilwell was forced off late in the contest, with Pochettino saying it appeared to be a hamstring injury. Chelsea return to Premier League action on Sunday with a trip to Fulham.

Chelsea's woes continued as they lost at home to Aston Villa and Sheffield United slumped to the bottom of the table as they suffered a humiliating 8-0 home thrashing by Newcastle United in which eight different Newcastle players scored. The first north London Premier League derby since 2014 not to feature Harry Kane produced an enthralling contest at The Emirates where the two unbeaten sides went toe-to-toe. Arsenal twice led, first through Cristian Romero's 26th-minute own goal, and again thanks to Bukayo Saka's penalty early in the second half. Mitoma then wrapped up the points as Brighton moved above Tottenham and Arsenal with 15 points. Newcastle ran riot at Sheffield United in the weekend's final action as they put eight past the hapless Blades -- their biggest win in the Premier League since they put eight past Sheffield Wednesday in 1999.

CNN —Chelsea suffered a 3-1 loss to West Ham on Sunday as its new-look team continues to adapt to the start of the Premier League season. Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino has supervised an overhaul of the squad since taking charge this year, but after two games, he is still searching for the first league win of his tenure. However, despite splashing the cash, creating an identity in soccer takes time and Pochettino urged fans to stick with the team. West Ham then found itself a man down after Aguerd was sent off for a second bookable offense after 67 minutes. Pochettino will hope it’s the perfect fixture to jump-start his tenure at the club, which is in desperate need of some stability.

LONDON, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Chelsea have broken the British transfer record for the second time in a year by signing Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo from Brighton & Hove Albion on an eight-year contract on Monday. Caicedo still had four years to run on his Brighton contract but had told the south-coast club he wished to leave. 'TOP MIDFIELDER'Caicedo signed for Brighton in February 2021 for a reported 4.5 million pounds and was loaned to Belgian club Beerschot in August that year.
